The short version

The rest of this page is the detail behind those five lines.

Who is responsible

LessonScriber is run by one person, in Ireland, as a sole trader. The registered name and address are published here as soon as registration completes; until then, the address below reaches that same person and nobody else.

For anything on this page, write to info@lessonscriber.com. A person answers.

If you only used the free tools

You can give a PDF a contents page, or join several into one volume, without an account — and in that case almost none of this page applies to you. No account is made, no address is asked for and nothing is kept about you. The files you send are held only while you are working on them and deleted as soon as you have taken the result — and in any case within thirty minutes, whether you come back or not. It is never opened by a person and never used for anything else. We count how many files have come from your network address in the last hour, to stop one person looping a script, and that count is kept in memory and forgotten when the server restarts.

What we hold

Your email address. It is how you sign in — there is no password on this service — and how we tell you your book is ready.

The recordings you upload. These are lessons, and they are private. How long we keep them is below, and it is the part of this page worth reading.

The books we make from them — the PDF and the Word file.

What you tell us about the lesson: its title, the speaker's name if you give one, and any names or terms you enter so the book spells them correctly. If you name a speaker, that is information about him as well as about you — see “The speaker on the recording” below.

A record of your usage: the length of each recording, when it was processed, and how many hours it drew from your plan. This is what the hours shown in your account are counted from.

Your IP address, for about two hours. Every request for a sign-in code is logged with the address it came from, so that nobody can sit there guessing six-digit codes at your account. Those entries are deleted automatically within hours of being written. We keep no other record of where you connect from.

Your plan, and later your payments. Payments are not open yet. When they are, they will be handled by Paddle, who will be the seller of record — we will never see or hold your card details. We will be told that a payment succeeded and which plan it was for, and nothing else.

We do not ask for your name, your telephone number or your postal address, and we do not have them.

Why we hold it, and under what lawful basis

Most of it is because the service cannot work otherwise — performance of a contract, Article 6(1)(b) of the GDPR. Your email address, your recordings, your books, the lesson details and your usage record are all in that category.

Two things rest on legitimate interests, Article 6(1)(f): the brief IP log that protects your account from someone guessing codes, and keeping the accounting records a business is required to keep.

We do not use your recordings or your books to train any model, ours or anyone else's. We do not sell, rent or share anything about you for anyone else's purposes.

How long we keep things

The recording is deleted seven days after you send it — whether or not you ask, and whether or not you have downloaded the book. Once the book exists the only reason to hold the audio is to re-run a job that went wrong, and a week is generous for that.

A job that failed is deleted whole after thirty days, audio and all.

The book stays until you delete it. Somebody who paid for a book should be able to download it again next year. When you delete it, the file, the record and anything left of the audio go with it.

The sign-in code you are emailed expires in fifteen minutes. A session lasts thirty days, and you can end every session on every device at once from the Devices panel in your account.

Your account and its usage record stay while the account exists. You can close it yourself, from your account — you do not have to ask us, and we cannot refuse. Everything goes seven days later: your books, your recordings, your usage record and every session. The seven days are so that a mis-press, or somebody who has got into your mailbox, cannot destroy your books with nothing to undo — sign in once before then and the closure is called off. What survives is only what tax and accounting law obliges us to keep: the amount, the date and the plan. It carries no address, no name, no recording, no book and no lesson of yours.

Who else handles your information

A small number of services make the product work. Each sees only what its own step needs.

Who What they see Where
Sonioxthe audio and any names or terms you enter, to transcribe itUnited States
Groqthe audio and any names or terms you enter, and only if Soniox is unavailableUnited States
Anthropicthe transcript and any names or terms you enter, to organise it into a bookUnited States
Resendyour email address and the message, to deliver itUnited States
Renderhosting — the server the service runs onUnited States / EU
Paddleyour payment details, once payments openUnited Kingdom / United States

Each acts on our instructions, except Paddle, who will be a controller in their own right for the payment itself. Because several are outside the European Economic Area, those transfers are made under the safeguards set out in each provider's data processing terms.

The speaker on the recording

A recording of a lesson is also a recording of the person who taught it, so his voice and his words are his information as much as yours. Two things follow from that, and only two.

If a speaker asks us to remove a recording of himself, we will. Write to us and it is done.

And a book is a record, not an authorised edition. What comes out is what was said in the recording, as faithfully as we can make it. It has not been reviewed or approved by the speaker, and it should never be presented as though it had been.

Writing down a lesson you are listening to is an ordinary thing to do, and nothing on this page is meant to suggest otherwise.

Keeping it safe

The service runs over HTTPS. There is no password on your account to be stolen, guessed or reused somewhere else — you sign in with a code that expires in fifteen minutes. Your recordings are not public and are not linked from anywhere; another signed-in customer asking for your book is answered as though it does not exist. And the surest protection is the seven-day rule above: material that has been deleted cannot be lost.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you may:

Write to info@lessonscriber.com. We answer within one month, and it costs nothing.

If you are not satisfied with how we handled it, you may complain to the Irish Data Protection Commission at dataprotection.ie, or to the supervisory authority where you live.

Cookies, and what sits in your browser

No analytics, no advertising, and no third-party tracking of any kind. There is no banner on this site because there is nothing to ask you about.

Two cookies, both ours, both necessary:

Your browser also keeps your chosen language locally, and holds the email address you typed on the front page just long enough to fill it in on the sign-in screen, after which it is cleared.

Changes

If we change this page we will update the date at the top. If a change matters — a new processor, or a different retention period — we will email everybody who has an account before it takes effect.
